Statement on Privacy and Data Protection

§ 1: General Statement

thebiotechknows.com acknowledges that it is important for the User how his/her personal information is used. thebiotechknows.com respects and protects the User's personal data and takes his/her privacy very seriously. Any personal data the User stored within the service will be used by thebiotechknows.com in full compliance to the German Data Protection Law. Please read the following statement in order to find further information. Nevertheless this statement is a binding agreement between the provider and the User. thebiotechknows.com only collects, uses and processes personal data in order to run the service as you know it, i.e. show the User's profile to other Users, share information with one another etc. If you have any questions concerning this subject please contact us via info@thebiotechknows.com. This statement is an addition to the General Terms and Conditions (GTC). Therefore the general definitions and provisions of the GTC apply.

§ 2 Personal Data

Personal data is every data which is directly related to a User's identity such as name, birthdate, address, email address, gender, academic career, which groups the User is member of and which conferences he/she attends. The provider will store the personal data you enter and submit to the service. The User can see the data on his/her own profile and will be able to change or delete most of it. For changing the very personal data i.e. the name, the User has to contact the provider. The User can choose not to provide certain information but then may not be able to take advantage of some of the service's features. The very basic data like the User's name is visible to all Users, while for most of his/her data the User can choose if it is visible on the profile for all visitors, only for selected Users, for members of certain groups or completely hidden. The e-mail address will not be shown anywhere to other visitors unless the User adds the e-mail address to his/her profile. The provider reserves the right to process personal data in order to generate anonymous statistics. Those anonymous statistics will contain no information about the individual User. Also the provider reserves the right to access personal data in order to provide his service. After termination of the User's membership the provider will delete the User's data. The provider will not store any personal data of erstwhile Users, unless the User agrees to do so.

§ 3 Traffic Data

Traffic data, in this statement, is data which is not directly related to the User's identity, but data about the User's usage of the service, such as IP-address, Login information, browser information, which pages are visited, what functions he/she used. The provider collects this traffic data and stores this data and uses it for help diagnose problems with the servers or the service, gather anonymously statistics and administer the platform. This type of data will be deleted after 30 days. After the end of the session i.e. the User logged out or an inactivity of 60min this data is not connected to the User's account anymore, so that the provider will not be able to name any individual User behind traffic data, but anyone else is probably able to do so (i.e. the User's internet provider who knows the User of the used IP-address) The provider may collect and, on any page, display the total counts that page has been viewed. This includes profile pages of Users, groups, resources.

§ 4 Cookies

Cookies are alphanumeric identifiers that are transferred to the User's computer through her/his webbrowser to enable the provider's system to recognize the User after he/she logged into the service as a registered User and provides the User with personalized content. After the end of the browsing session the cookies will expire and the provider will not be able to identify the User as a registered thebiotechknows.com User unless he/she will login again. Some of the provider's business partners, like the advertisers, may use cookies on the thebiotechknows.com website. The provider has no access to, or control over, those cookies, but they are not connected in any way to the traffic data the provider gathers as said before.

§ 5 Email Communication

The provider will never provide the User's e-mail address to any third party without the User's explicit authorization. The provider may send the User e-mails in order to inform him/her about service related news, like the date of server maintenance or information about new features. The provider may also provide the User with e-mails to inform her/him of activities on his/her profile e.g. the reception of new messages, invitations or new group members. In case the User does not want to receive such notification e-mails he/she can change the settings by using the Edit section on his/her profile. However, in all cases the User will still receive all system e-mails (e.g. regarding forgotten password, updates on the provider's policies) as long as she/he is registered.

§ 6 Shared Information

Sharing information with one another is the goal of the service and therefore an essential part of the thebiotechknows experience. The provider will neither rent nor sell the User's personal information to anyone and it will only be shared in the way described as followed or said above in § 2 and 3: The provider's personnel and authorized consultants and/or contractors may have access to User information if necessary in order to maintain and run the service. The provider may choose to buy or sell assets. In these cases, User information is typically one of the business assets that is transferred. Moreover, if thebiotechknows.com, or substantially all of its assets, were acquired, User information would be one of the assets that is transferred. In this case all Users will be informed of this transaction and will be able to remove their data from the thebiotechknows platform. The provider may release personal information in order to comply with a law; to enforce or apply the provider's GTC and its additions; or to protect the rights, property, or safety of the provider, its employees, the Users or others.

§ 7 Information Security

The User's thebiotechknows.com account is protected by a password. The User is strongly advised not to show this password to anyone else. For privacy and security reasons the User shall protect this password against any unauthorized access and shall end the sessions of the service by logging off. Only employees who need personal information to perform a specific job (for example, a customer service representative) are granted access to it. All of the provider's employees are kept up to date on the provider's privacy and security practices.

§ 8 Ways to Control Display and Use of User's Information

As stated previously, the User can always opt not to disclose information, but then may be unable to use certain features on this website, i.e. such as sending messages. By visiting his/her User Profile or a profile of an object the User has created, he/she can correct, amend, add or delete information on this website. When the User updates information, however, the provider sometimes maintains a copy of the unrevised information in the provider's records or backups for a short time.

§ 9 Delete a profile

The User can delete objects he/she created (like groups, offers) via the Edit function within the objects profile page as long as the User does not transfer the ownership to another User. The same applies to the User's account. When she/he chooses to delete a profile the to be deleted information may be stored in the provider's backups for a limited time of max 30 days. Also the provider will not remove messages the User has sent to other Users or posted in message boards. These messages will be marked so that the reader realizes that the senders account has been deleted. § 10 Changes to this Privacy Policy

thebiotechknows.com may amend this Privacy Policy from time to time, at its sole discretion. Use of information the provider collects now is subject to the Privacy Policy in effect at the time such information is used. If the provider makes changes to the Privacy Policy, it will notify the User by posting an announcement on the thebiotechknows.com website so the Users are always aware of what information the provider collects, how it is used, and under what circumstances if any, it is disclosed.

§ 10 Effective Date of this Statement on Privacy and Data Protection

This Statement on Privacy and Data Protection is effective as of Mai 1, 2011.
